Dog Hunting Training

by Carolyn Hellum

If you are sporting person who loves to hunt, and would like to have a canine companion along with you on your hunt to help with retrievals, then you need to have dog hunting training. Dog hunting training ensures you that not only will your dog know basic commands for proper retrieval, but also will keep him safe out in the hunting lands with you.

Dog hunting training should start when the dog is a puppy. A hunting dog should not go out on a true hunt until he is properly trained, as it could be very dangerous for the dog. The hardest part about training a hunting dog, is that the owner usually wants the hunting dog as a pet as well. Training should start with basic obedience commands like sit, stay, and whoa. The dog should be trained to respect the owner as well. Being gentle and kind to your dog when training and using discipline when needed, you will train a dog to respect its owner. By using these commands when training your hunting dog it will help your dog when looking for the game you are hunting for, rather than you ending up with you looking for your hunting dog.

A hunting dog should be trained to hunt by scent rather than by sight, because he may not always be able to see the game he is hunting. He should also be trained to focus on the commands that his owner is giving him. If a hunting dog is trained well, it will always keep their eye on the owner which will tell the dog where you are and what you are doing. A dog that is not trained well will often go off to hunt on his own. Dog hunting training is imperative in order to have a safe, enjoyable hunt with your dog.
