Dog Name

by Carolyn Hellum

Are you having a difficult time coming up with a good dog name for your new pet? A few good tips to remember are to 1) try to make the name more than one syllable because it is easier for the dog to hear a longer name rather a shorter one, and 2) make sure that the dog name you want to give your dog does not sound like something else that she could confuse it with. You don’t want her confusing obedience commands with her name.

After you have named your new pet, remember to use the name often so that he or she learns it quickly. Use his name when you playing with him, petting him, feeding her or just trying to get her attention. The key to getting your dog used to his or her name is repetition.

Try to remember to NOT use your dog’s name when you are scolding him or her, because you want him to like his name, and if you are using it when you are angry and using a loud voice, your dog will start to connect fear with it’s name, and may not obey or even come when you call his name.

Your dog’s appearance will help you when choosing a dog name. Likewise, the way a dog behaves and interacts with people will give you clues as to the type of name that would be good for him or her. You want to make sure that your dog name reflects the personality of the dog, so have fun choosing your dog’s name and use it wisely!
