Potty training your dog is paramount to having a good relationship with your canine companion. Dog potty training does not need to be difficult, you just need to be faithful and patient in all the steps towards having a dog who completely passes the potty training steps.
You will first want to establish a den area where your dog will sleep and eat. In the den make sure to have a special bed for your dog. Play and socialize with your dog in his den so that he knows that it is his living area. Then establish the toileting area, first make sure it is a place where he will have access to whenever he needs to eliminate. If he does not have access, he will establish his own toileting area, one where you will likely not want it to be. Until he establishes a strong habit of eliminating in the toileting area, it is important that you accompany him there.
To make things easier on yourself and your dog, start by putting your dog on a regular feeding schedule; What goes in on a regular schedule, will come out on a regular schedule. If you know when your dog needs to empty his bladder or bowels, you will be able to take him out to the toileting area to do so. Note that a healthy dog should be able to hold his bladder and bowels for 8 hours. Do not confine your dog for periods longer than they can control their bodily functions, doing so will cause them to eliminate on themselves and in inappropriate areas, which will begin a habit that will be hard to break.
Praising your dog and giving treats when he has successfully eliminated in the established toileting area will speed up the dog potty training process. It is equally important to NOT reprimand your dog for having an accident in an area that is not the toileting area. Doing so will only confuse your dog and slow down the dog potty training process.
